Teaching Ideas for Using Pick-a-Picture Game- Practising Blending for Reading (p60)

Blend to read each word and find the picture that matches the word.

Phonics Learning Opportunities

To practise blending for reading.

To motivate children to read words.

Organisation

Whole class, small group or 1:1.

Once children are familiar with the game, they could play it independently.

Teaching ideas

Choose which phase to work on.

Click to get a new word.

Ask the children to look at the word and look at the four pictures. Ask them to decide which picture matches the word. You could ask children to make this decision on their own, discuss in pairs or small groups. You could ask the children to share their thoughts at this point or simply keep the answers in their heads and wait to see if they are right.

Model sound talking each sound in the word and then blending the sounds together and saying the final word. Ask the whole class to repeat this with you as you point to each sound.

Point to each picture and ask children to give a thumbs up if they think that picture is the matching one.

For subsequent words, ask the children to sound talk and blend the words. It works quite well to ask individual children to do this and then get the whole class to repeat the sound talking and the blended word. If the initial child struggles to blend the word, ask other members of the class if they can help out.

Again, ask the children to decide which picture matches the word.

Extensions

Please remember these are just ideas. You know your children best and can adapt this game in anyway you like to help them learn to blend.

Print out picture cards for the appropriate phase. Play any matching pairs games that you can think of e.g snap, pelmanism etc. It works well to have 2 children (or 2 pairs or 2 small groups) working with identical packs of cards and racing to match all the pairs of cards. Alternatively, time a child, pair or group matching the cards and encourage them to try to beat their best time each time they play.

Encourage older children to invent their own games using these cards.
